Jaisalmer is sometimes also known as the "Golden City of India" because the yellow sand gives a yellowish-golden tinge to the city and its surrounding area. It is the largest district of Rajasthan and one of the largest in the country. Jaisalmer is named after its founder Rao Jaysal means "the Hill Fort of Jaisal".

Jaisalmer fort is the second oldest in Rajasthan. The splendid Jaisalmer Fort stands proudly on its land and narrates the stories of the valor and chivalry of the Rajput rulers. Even today one fourth of the old city's population resides within the fort.
